Dawson County, Georgia is located approximately 40 miles north of Atlanta, along the State Road 400 corridor. The county is nestled in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains, and has abundant recreational opportunities.

Geography

The county seat of Dawson County is Dawsonville, Georgia. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Dawson County covers 211 square miles. 208 square miles of the County is land and 3 square miles (1.36%) is water.

Part of Lake Lanier is in the southeastern part of the county and the boundary line with neigboring counties passes through the lake. The 729-foot Amicalola Falls are the highest not only in Georgia, but the highest falls east of the Mississippi River and are considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia. The highest point in the county is Black Mountain, with an elevation of 3,600 feet. The Amicalola, Chestatee and Etowah rivers flow through Dawson County.

Demographics

As of the 2010 Census, there were 22,330 people, 8,433 households, and 6,390 families residing in the county.  Of the 22,330 residents in the county there are 1,985 veterans. The population density was 106 residents per square mile. There were 10,425 housing units at an average density of 49 per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 95.6% White, 0.5% Black or African American, 0.4% American Indian and Alaska Native, 0.6% Asian,0.0% Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, 4.1% Hispanic or Latino origin, and 1.4% from two or more races.

There were 8,433 households out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.7% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 24.2% were nonfamily households.  19.7% were made of householders living alone and of these 6.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 2.97.  The homeownership rate for Dawson County was 78.9% and the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $201,400.  84.7% of the population has lived in the same house for one year or longer.

In the county the population was spread out with 25% under the age of 19, 6.1% from 20 to 24, 25% from 25 to 44, 29.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 41 years.

In the county there are 50% females and 50% males. 84.6% of the population age 25 or older are high school graduates and 18.8% of the population age 25 or older have a bachelor's degree or higher.

The median income for a household in the county was $51,128. The per capita income for the county was $25,557. 12.0% of the population were below the poverty line.
